90th Bomb Group Message Board
Message No. 399Message:
The 90th Bomb Group did not start being "the Jolly Rogers" Lt. Col. Art Rogers became the group commander on July 11, 1943. The name "Jolly Rogers" is because of that commanders name. The idea of calling the group the Jolly Rogers came from 2nd Lt. Bernard Stoecklien. He is also credited with the idea of the smiling skull with crossed bombs being put on the tail fins of the B24's. The artist who designed the artwork was Sgt. Leonard H. Baer. He cut the design out of plywood and painted it under the serial number on the tail of Roger's plane, CONNELL'S SPECIAL.
They used the same pattern for all of the 90th planes.
