LOCAL FLYER IN RABAUL ATTACK
Staff Sgt. Joseph Broschart on Bomber Which Helped Wreck Jap Base.
Among those who participated in this week's devastating raid on the great Jap base at Rabaul, New Guinea, and on the same plane which carried Peter Hemery,International News Service Staff Correspondent was Staff Sgt. Joseph Broschart, engineer of the bomber, commanded by Major Charles Whitlock, of New Brunswick, N.J., the correspondent mentions in a dispatch today.
Their B-24 bomber, the "Eager Beaver", oldest B-24 in that South Pacific area, had most of its original crew, which has been carried by it throughout the war, and has won its members countless decorations for its exploits.
According to Hemery, planes dotted the sky as far as the eye could see, and when they arrived over their target, it was impossible to see their own bombs burst, they were able to observe those of the ships following them. Rabaul's buildings burst red amid the jungle green, while shipping which appeared microscopic, became enveloped in a mass of flame.
Once clear of the target, the "Eager Beaver" dived for speed, and simultaneously the plane shook with the chattering concussion of the bomber's guns as Zero's viciously attacked but failed to make a hit, Hemery reported on his return.
