Message No. 677Message:
According to Wiley O. Woods Jr's book Legacy of the 90th Bombardment Group The Jolly Rogers "At 1404 on May 6, plane num,ber 44-41482, flown by Capt. Hans H Williams, took off from McGuire in heavy showers, carrying men to manilla on leave. It was raining near the east end of McGuire, but clearing in the west. The ceiling was zero over land but visibility increased to 10 miles at sea. Although normally a skeleton crew aboard a B24 consisted of five men; pilot, copilot, navigator, engineer and radio operator. Williams did not carry a navigator. When he failed to arrive at Clark Field by 2000, it was evident he had landed at another field or was down.
For five diays Catalinas searched along the route that Williams would have probably flown. No sign of his plane was ever found and the search was called off on June 11. There were 24 men on board the plane and the loss of these men was the greatest single catastrophe in the history of the 90th bombardment group."
